I am My Mother’s Daughter: Thoughts of a Second-Generation Entrepreneur

Stepping into the shoes of a second-generation entrepreneur is like walking a tightrope between honoring the past and carving out your own future. My mother is a woman of courage whose passion and leadership built not just a family enterprise, but a vision so powerful it continues to inspire generations and generations of kids-at-heart.

Extraordinary doesn't even begin to describe her dedication to Klaypel. Her ability to nurture creativity and bring people together laid the foundation of everything the brand stands for today: individuality, self-expression, and heartfelt artistry. One glance at Klaypel will bare her heart and soul; she has created something much larger than herself—a community, a movement, a legacy.

And then there’s me—her exact opposite. While she is a beacon of fiery determination and larger-than-life leadership, I feel quieter, more introspective. She built Klaypel as a strong, unshakeable force, and I’ve often found myself unsettled.

The world always seemed a bit too loud for me, and too full of neatly packaged messages and ideals. I struggled to reconcile who I was with who I believed I needed to be. The weight of comparison laid heavy, but years of learning the ropes have taught me to embrace this foundation and the beautiful uniqueness of our dynamic.

Slowly I’ve been learning to create not out of obligation, but from a place of honesty. It wasn’t until I found those who celebrated me for who I am that I realized the power of authenticity. Being surrounded by people who embraced my quirks gave me the courage to step into the fullness of my identity as a daughter and a leader.

The thought of carrying on a legacy loses its esse over time; time will come when a legacy must evolve. My mother's leadership is bold and pioneering, and I reckon that what I bring to the table are a stubborn obsession with details and an eternal perspective. Together, these distinctions make Klaypel a living, breathing story of growth and the undeniable power of blood-bond creativity.

I know this story will resemble a familiar note to many, but the greatest lesson here is one of identity. Running a business means going through unpredictable seasons of ups and downs, to say the least. How does one survive two decades of business in a crazy, ever-changing world? To be unmoved is to embrace the revelation of who we are as sons of the God of the Universe, Creator of Heaven and Earth! My mother's zest for life, her endless sense of wonder, and her steadfast confidence flow from a connection and a beautiful relationship with the Unlimited Source. In Him we live, and move, and have our being - is a lesson I have been so privileged to witness in my mother's life, and one I know will carry me through.

Today, I honor my mother whose leadership paved the way for me, whose creativity runs in my veins. The path ahead may look different, but that's the key to innovation, to truth, and to creating something genuine. Happy Birthday, Mother.
